Researchers from the MTA-RCH Momentum Bioarchaeolgy Research Group gave two presentations on their findings at the conference, held in Zagreb from 31 August to 2 September 2025.

Established in 2021, the ICORB interdisciplinary conference brings together researchers of different disciplines to share their ongoing research and new advances related to the study of Roman bioarchaeology.

Anna Szécsényi-Nagy, lead researcher of the Momentum Bioarchaeolgy Research Group, presented findings, which shed new light on the complex web of interactions between the diverse Romanized populations of Pannonia and the Barbarians at the edge of the Roman world. Based on the whole genomic analysis of ancient DNA data from 50 Sarmatian individuals from the Pest Plain (3rd–5th centuries A.D.) and nearly 100 Late-Roman-era individuals from the west side of the Danube River, this study revealed differences in genetic diversity and population dynamics on either side of the imperial border. The list of authors and the title of her presentation are as follows:

  • Anna Szécsényi-Nagy, Veronika Csáky, Balázs Gusztáv Mende, Mónika Merczi, Krisztián Kiss, Katalin Ottományi, Orsolya Láng, Valéria Kulcsár:
Population Structure and Mobility in the Roman and Sarmatian Worlds of the Carpathian Basin

Kiss Krisztián offered insights into how the research group explores the health and life of the inhabitants of Roman Pannonia through the example of the Csúcshegy-Harsánylejtő site (3rd–4th centuries A.D.) in today’s Budapest area. Paleopathological analysis of 30 individuals from this villa estate site revealed signs of non-specific pathophysiological stress, pathologies like traumatic alterations, intentional cranial modification, and metabolic disorders. The list of authors and the title of his presentation are as follows:

  • Krisztián Kiss, Anikó Kecskés, Orsolya Mateovics-László, Orsolya Láng, Péter Vámos, Balázs Mende, Anna Szécsényi-Nagy:
People from the Villa: An Anthropological Analysis of the Harsánylejtő Site (3rd-4th centuries CE) from Pannonia Inferior
